The year was 2001 and the imaginary artist DJ Charisma decided to change his artist name to DJ Stalin, and to release a real album this time around. The result was an album with a bizarre collection of MP3 tracks, which seemingly were misplaced.

DJ Stalin recalls: “In my search for a new aesthetic fitting the coming Internet era, I decided to make my first five albums in the lossy MP3 format, and on the first record, I experimented with fixed CD time tracks and the real outcome. The result was staggering – the first song, Born in Georgia, which featured acoustic guitar played by myself, disappeared and was replaced by the second song, Life, while the fixed times for the original album was still in place. This is why the album has a unique setup – the track times do not follow the actual songs.”

The album Red Army was an experiment which proved so successful it bolstered DJ Stalin’s career in the true underground music scene and resulted in many more albums to come in the first decade of the 21st century.

Red Army was re-released by Ixatla on September 30 on a private torrent tracker, in an effort to keep the spirit of the original DJ Stalin series to be “true underground”, ie not available to the general public.
